How to... style a pencil skirt

Pencil skirts, normally thought of as strictly office attire right? This is how I used to view them, boring and black for that 'sexy secretary' look. How wrong I was!

Pencil skirts can be styled for so many occassions if you pick the right accessories.

Check out my ideas below

1. For a day in the office

For work a neutral coloured skirt with a subtle print is office appropriate without being boring. Just tuck in a white silk shirt and add a statement ring or tuck a chunky necklace under the collar to finish the look.

2. For a summer BBQ

For a summer BBQ with friends go bright! A colour pop skirt with a cute floral bralette and lots of clashing accessories is perfect for an afternoon in the sun (if we ever get any in the UK!). When it gets chilly at night just pop on an oversized knit and you're good to go.

3. For a cocktail party

For a cocktail party pick a skirt with a beautiful pattern. This should be the focal point, but don't forget lots and lots of jewellery - it is a party after all!

What do you think, what different ways would you style a pencil skirt?

Topshop Trends

I received an email from Topshop the other day about their brand new trend. Yey, I thought, another neon/fringing/festival overpriced trend for me to ignore.

However, one glance at the name of this trend persuaded me to take another look...

Scandi Girl

Yes please! (Any help making me look like a cool Scandinavian is greatly appreciated).

And having a quick glance at the look book, I was right to take a second look.

I am loving the patterned socks, tough boots and copious knitwear layering. All it needs is a Kanken rucksack and the look would be perfection.

I am unsure how this can be passed off as a summer collection, but hey I'm not complaining. I have decided that investing any money in summer clothes is a total waste unless I'm flying off to sunnier climes.

Shop Scandi Girl here.

What do you think of this collection? Finally a winner from Topshop?

Alexa

Gosh I am so fickle. Here I was thinking I had gone off Alexa Chung completely. Due to the curse of over exposure (a phenomenon which has also done no favours to Olivia Palmero and Kate Bosworth, but more on them another time) I was getting a bit sick of the sight of Alexa (nothing personal love!). That is until I spotted this lovely 60s editorial in the new copy of Harper's Bazaar. I. Am. In. Love.

I didn't want to overload your retinas so I only picked a few shots, but the last one is my fave by far.

I am feeling really inspired by 60's style right now. There was another great editorial in Marie Claire last month (Carrie at wishwishwish featured it at the bottom of this post here), and now I want a whole wardrobe full of 60's inspired basics. I am head over heels for the block colour and simple lines, I really do favour simplicity over fuss in my outfits.

p.s. finally got my new twitter sorted so follow me here @dreaminboutique for my ramblings throughout the day.
